Father’s Murder Suspect Arrested at Dhaka Airport While Fleeing Abroad

A 26-year-old man accused of killing his father was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka while allegedly attempting to leave Bangladesh for Oman, police said. The arrest took place on Wednesday afternoon, shortly after a murder case was filed against him and another family member.

The suspect, Borhan Uddin, is from Kokdandi village in Kalipur Union of Banshkhali upazila in Chattogram. Police allege that he struck his father, Mohammad Shahjahan, 55, on the neck with a wooden log during a family dispute on Monday night. Shahjahan died at Chattogram Medical College Hospital on Tuesday afternoon while receiving treatment.

According to police and local sources, an argument broke out at around 10pm on Monday over a family matter. Shahjahan reportedly became involved in a heated exchange with his wife, Asma Begum, and daughter, Ruby Akter. During the dispute, Borhan, who had recently returned from abroad, allegedly attacked his father with a piece of wood.

Shahjahan sustained serious injuries and was subsequently taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital. Despite receiving medical treatment, his condition deteriorated and he died on Tuesday.

Following the death, Shahjahan’s sister, Lucky Akter, filed a case naming Borhan Uddin and Ruby Akter as accused. Police began searching for the suspects after the case was lodged.

Borhan allegedly remained out of sight after the incident. Investigators later received information that he was attempting to leave the country. He travelled to Dhaka and reached Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, reportedly intending to board a flight to Oman. Police intercepted and arrested him at the airport before he could leave Bangladesh.

Banshkhali Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Sudhanshu Shekhar Haldar confirmed the arrest. He said Borhan was allegedly trying to flee to Oman in connection with the case and was detained at the Dhaka airport.

Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Shahjahan’s death. Officers are also attempting to locate and arrest the other accused, Ruby Akter.

The incident has drawn attention to the escalation of a domestic dispute into a fatal assault and to the efforts of law-enforcement agencies to prevent suspects in serious criminal cases from leaving the country. The investigation will now focus on establishing the sequence of events inside the family home, determining the precise circumstances of the fatal injury and assessing the roles allegedly played by each accused.

Borhan’s arrest at the airport means investigators can question him directly as part of the case. Any further legal proceedings will depend on the evidence gathered during the investigation and subsequent court proceedings.
