Youth Hacked to Death Amid Rival Group Clash in Mymensingh

A 27-year-old man was allegedly hacked to death during a clash between two rival groups in the Maskanda area of Mymensingh city on Thursday afternoon, amid a longstanding dispute over local dominance.

The incident took place on Passport Office Road at around 11.30am, according to police and local sources. The victim, identified as Rabbi, was a resident of the area and ran a computer and photocopy shop in front of the passport office. His shop was regularly used by people visiting the area for passport-related services.

Police said tensions had reportedly been building between two groups in Maskanda for some time. The dispute was allegedly linked to attempts to establish influence in the locality. The simmering rivalry escalated into a physical confrontation on Thursday, when supporters of the two sides became involved in a clash.

Local residents said several people involved in the confrontation were carrying sharp weapons, including machetes. During the clash, Rabbi was allegedly attacked by members of the opposing group and sustained serious injuries after being struck with sharp weapons.

He reportedly died at the scene. The violent incident quickly created panic among people in the surrounding area, prompting police to move to the location to bring the situation under control.

Mohammad Shibirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station, confirmed the incident. He said a clash between two groups had taken place following a dispute and that one person had been killed.

The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the confrontation, including the precise cause of the dispute and the identities of those allegedly involved in the killing. Investigators are also expected to examine accounts from witnesses and local residents as they seek to establish how the confrontation began and how it escalated into a fatal attack.

Rabbi was known locally as he lived in the Maskanda area and operated his business near the passport office. His death has caused grief among relatives and residents, while the killing has also heightened tension in the neighbourhood.

Police activity has been increased in the area to prevent further violence and maintain public order. Officers are working to identify those allegedly involved and determine the appropriate legal action against them. The authorities are also carrying out the necessary legal procedures concerning the victim’s body.

Residents said the dispute between the two sides had persisted for some time and that tensions over local influence had eventually turned violent. However, the exact nature of the previous disputes, the immediate trigger for Thursday’s clash and the number of people involved in the alleged killing have yet to be established conclusively.

Authorities have urged local residents to remain calm and avoid any actions that could trigger further confrontation. Police are continuing to monitor the situation closely.

The investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances of Rabbi’s death, identify those responsible and determine the legal measures to be taken against them.
