Moscow, February 23, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Russian President Vladimir Putin has reaffirmed his unwavering support for Russian troops in Ukraine, stating that they are safeguarding the nation’s “national interests” and securing its future. His remarks were delivered in a video address released by the Kremlin on Defenders of the Fatherland Day, a national holiday honoring military personnel.
As Russia approaches the third anniversary of its large-scale military campaign in Ukraine, Putin emphasized the ongoing commitment to strengthening the country’s armed forces in an evolving global landscape.
“Today, at the risk of their lives and with courage, they are resolutely defending their homeland, national interests, and Russia’s future,” he said.
Putin also pledged to enhance the combat readiness of the Russian military, highlighting that a strong army and navy are crucial components of national security and sovereignty.
In his address, Putin reiterated Russia’s determination to equip its forces with cutting-edge weaponry. He referenced the introduction of new “modern models” of arms, including the hypersonic missile “Oreshnik,” which was first tested against Ukraine in November 2024.
Alongside military developments, Russia has also witnessed a shift in diplomatic relations with the United States under President Donald Trump. Putin noted that he held a 90-minute phone conversation with Trump on January 12, followed by initial Russian-American discussions in Saudi Arabia. The Kremlin has expressed interest in resuming dialogue with Washington “on all parameters,” signaling potential changes in geopolitical strategies.
Russia launched its military offensive against Ukraine on February 24, 2022, citing the need to counter the perceived threat of NATO expansion. Since then, the conflict has escalated into the most devastating war in Europe since World War II.
While the Kremlin continues to frame its military actions as a defensive measure, Western nations and Ukraine maintain that Russia’s invasion is an aggressive violation of international law. The war has led to significant casualties, widespread destruction, and shifting global alliances.
As Russia marks another Defenders of the Fatherland Day amid ongoing hostilities, Putin’s message underscores the country’s intent to persist with its military strategy while navigating complex international relations.
