Hasan Mahmud Makes History on Australian Soil

Bangladesh pace bowler Hasan Mahmud produced a career-defining performance in Darwin, claiming six wickets for 55 runs against Australia in the first innings at Marrara Stadium. His spell not only became the best bowling figures of his Test career but also made him the first Bangladeshi fast bowler to take five or more wickets in a Test innings on Australian soil.

The achievement marked a significant moment in Bangladesh’s Test history. Across all three formats, no Bangladeshi bowler had previously taken at least five wickets in a single innings in Australia. Hasan’s six-wicket haul therefore surpassed the previous best performances by Bangladeshi bowlers in the country.

Before the tour, Hasan had spoken about his ambition to take five wickets at least twice during the series. He had even imagined the moment privately. In Darwin, that ambition became reality in the very first innings.

Hasan was a constant threat from the opening stages of Australia’s innings. Although he did not take a wicket during the first hour, his disciplined bowling outside the off stump kept Jake Weatherald under sustained pressure. The Australian opener eventually attempted a drive and edged the ball to the fielders.

Hasan then benefited from extra bounce and movement to dismiss Travis Head, who inadvertently dragged the ball back on to his own stumps. He completed his opening spell with two wickets, giving Bangladesh an important early advantage.

Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain continued to maintain pressure from the other end, ensuring that Australia’s batters were unable to settle. After the lunch interval, Hasan returned to the attack and quickly added another major wicket, having Australia captain Pat Cummins caught behind.

In his next over, Mitchell Starc suffered a similar fate, giving Hasan his fourth wicket of the innings. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto turned to the fast bowler again after the tea interval, and the decision paid off almost immediately.

Hasan claimed his fifth wicket when Steve Smith attempted to pull a short delivery but offered a catch. He then completed his six-wicket haul by dismissing Nathan Lyon, taking the final Australian wicket with a catch off his own bowling.

Australia were eventually bowled out for 198, with Bangladesh’s collective bowling effort playing a crucial role in keeping the hosts under pressure throughout the innings.

Hasan has now taken five or more wickets in a Test innings on three occasions. Remarkably, all three performances have come away from home. He previously achieved the feat against India in Chennai and Pakistan in Rawalpindi in 2024, while he has also produced a five-wicket haul in county cricket in England.

Among Bangladeshi fast bowlers, Hasan now holds the distinction of taking five wickets in a Test innings three times outside Bangladesh. His latest performance, however, carries particular significance because it came against one of the world’s strongest Test sides and on Australian soil.

Speaking during the innings break, Hasan said he had been eager to play in Australia because of the quality of the opposition. He credited his success to maintaining his line and length, following the planned process and carrying out the captain’s instructions.

He also stressed that the wickets were not solely the result of his individual effort. Bangladesh’s bowlers maintained pressure from both ends, making it difficult for Australia’s batting line-up to establish partnerships.

The six-wicket haul represents another important step in Hasan’s development as an international fast bowler. More significantly, it provides Bangladesh with a landmark bowling performance in Australia and adds another notable chapter to the country’s growing Test cricket record.
