Technology Saves Smith After Another Close Call

Steven Smith survived another anxious moment on the opening day of the Darwin Test, but this time technology played a decisive role in keeping the Australian batter at the crease.

Smith had already been given two lives during his innings. He was on just two when Tanzid Hasan dropped a catch, while the absence of a third slip also helped him survive another potentially dangerous situation. Yet the most unusual escape came during the 21st over of Australia’s first innings, when Bangladesh appealed unsuccessfully for a catch behind the wicket.

Ebadot Hossain delivered a ball that passed very close to Smith’s bat before settling in the gloves of wicketkeeper Litton Das. Bangladesh’s fielders immediately appealed, but umpire Kumar Dharmasena remained unmoved. Convinced that there had been contact, Bangladesh opted to review the decision.

Smith appeared so certain that he was out that he began walking towards the dressing room. The replay, however, produced a surprising result. UltraEdge failed to detect a spike or any corresponding sound wave as the ball passed the bat. With no technological evidence confirming an edge, the original decision remained and Smith returned to the crease.

At the end of play, however, Smith admitted that he had himself felt something when the ball passed his bat. His comments added an intriguing dimension to an already remarkable dismissal review.

“I think so too,” Smith said when asked whether he believed the ball had touched his bat. “Sometimes that happens.”

Reflecting on the incident, he explained that although he had started walking away, he could not be certain of what had happened. “Maybe it didn’t hit my bat, but I felt something,” he said. “If I had been given out, I would have walked off. But it feels like technology saved me today.”

Smith made the most of his reprieve, scoring a team-high 71. His survival was particularly significant because Australia struggled against Bangladesh’s disciplined bowling attack and were eventually dismissed for only 198.

Hasan Mahmud was the chief destroyer, claiming six wickets and producing one of the most impressive bowling performances of the innings. Bangladesh’s bowlers repeatedly found enough movement off the pitch to trouble the Australian batting line-up, while their consistent lengths made it difficult for the hosts to build partnerships.

Smith acknowledged the quality of the attack after the day’s play.

“I thought all the bowlers bowled really well,” he said. “It was challenging for the batters. The ball was seaming a little and they bowled really good lengths, putting our defence under pressure. I thought all their bowlers bowled really well today.”

Despite Australia’s modest first-innings total, Bangladesh also made a promising start with the bat. By the close of play, they had reached 96 for one after 24 overs, leaving them 102 runs behind Australia’s total with nine wickets still in hand.

Australia therefore face an important second day. Smith remains confident that their bowlers can quickly change the momentum and bring the side back into the contest.

“I’m sure the bowlers are working on their plans,” he said. “Hopefully, we can take a few quick wickets early and get ourselves back into the match.”

For Smith, the first day was a mixture of fortune, uncertainty and resilience. He benefited from dropped chances, fielding positions and, most remarkably, a technological review that failed to confirm what he thought he had felt. By the end of the day, however, Bangladesh had the stronger position, while Australia needed their bowling attack to produce an immediate response.
