Bangladesh Bank Ends Chief Economist’s Remaining Contract

Bangladesh Bank has cancelled the remaining term of Chief Economist Mohammad Akhtar Hossain’s contractual appointment, bringing his tenure to an end ahead of its originally scheduled expiry.

The decision was announced in a notification issued by the central bank’s Human Resources Department-1 on Wednesday. According to the notification, the cancellation will take effect from 10 September 2026, from which date the existing contractual arrangement with Mr Hossain will no longer remain in force.

Mr Hossain had been appointed Chief Economist of Bangladesh Bank on a two-year contractual basis from 1 July 2025. On that basis, his appointment was expected to continue until the middle of 2027. The latest decision therefore means that his contract will end several months before the completion of its original term.

The position of Chief Economist carries considerable importance within a central bank. It supports economic research, macroeconomic assessment and the interpretation of major domestic and international economic developments. Analysis of inflation, economic growth, interest rates, exchange-rate movements, external balances and financial stability can all contribute to the formulation and evaluation of monetary policy.

Mr Hossain returned to Bangladesh after working abroad and subsequently took charge as the central bank’s Chief Economist. He joined the institution during the tenure of former Governor Ahsan H Mansur, with his appointment coming at a period when strengthening economic research and policy analysis was regarded as an important institutional priority.

The timing of the change is significant because Bangladesh Bank is dealing with several interconnected economic challenges. Persistent inflationary pressure, exchange-rate stability, foreign-exchange reserve management, weaknesses within the banking sector and the need to support sustainable economic growth have all placed considerable demands on monetary and financial policymakers.

The Chief Economist’s office can play an important role in assessing these developments and providing economic analysis to support policy decisions. Any change in its leadership may therefore lead to adjustments in the way research priorities, macroeconomic assessments and policy recommendations are organised.

The notification, however, does not provide a detailed explanation for the early termination of Mr Hossain’s contract, based on the information publicly available. It also does not specify who will assume responsibility for the Chief Economist’s functions after 10 September or whether a new appointment will be made immediately.

The central bank will consequently need to determine how the position is to be managed once the cancellation takes effect. Whether a successor is appointed, an interim arrangement is introduced, or the responsibilities are redistributed within the institution remains to be seen.

For Bangladesh Bank, maintaining continuity in economic research and policy analysis will be particularly relevant as it continues to navigate inflation, foreign-exchange market pressures, banking-sector reform and broader questions surrounding economic stability. The effect of the change will ultimately depend on the institution’s next steps and the arrangements put in place following Mr Hossain’s departure.
