Zelensky Calls for US-EU Unity to Secure Lasting Peace

Kyiv, February 23, 2025 (BSS/AFP) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday urged the United States and Europe to remain united in their efforts to achieve a “lasting and just peace” for Ukraine. His call for solidarity comes on the eve of the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion and amid growing concerns over former US President Donald Trump’s increasingly pro-Moscow stance.

“We must do our best to achieve a lasting and just peace for Ukraine,” Zelensky stated on Telegram. “This is possible with the unity of all partners: we need the strength of the whole of Europe, the strength of America, the strength of all those who want lasting peace.”

Largest Drone Attack Since Invasion

Zelensky’s statement also came in the wake of the most intense Russian drone assault since the war began in 2022. Ukrainian authorities reported that Russia launched 267 drones overnight, breaking previous records. While 138 drones were intercepted by air defense, the attack highlighted the ongoing intensity of the conflict and the necessity of continued international military support.

Geopolitical Challenges and Rising Uncertainty

Zelensky’s appeal for unity follows recent reports of Trump’s attempts to sideline Ukraine and its European allies from key discussions about the future of the war. Trump’s reluctance to continue Washington’s firm backing for Kyiv has sparked fears that US policy could shift dramatically if he returns to the White House.

The European Union and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their support for Ukraine, with the UK set to announce its largest sanctions package against Russia since the early days of the war. However, European leaders worry that any forced settlement could strengthen Russian President Vladimir Putin’s position and weaken Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

The Path Forward

Zelensky’s renewed call for unity serves as a strategic message to the West as Ukraine faces continued military pressure from Russia and uncertainty about its future diplomatic and defense alliances. As the war enters its fourth year, maintaining a strong transatlantic coalition will be crucial in ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty and preventing further destabilization in the region.
