Former Dhaka University VC AAMS Arefin Siddique Passes Away

Eminent academic and former Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. AAMS Arefin Siddique passed away yesterday at Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital in Dhaka. He was 72.

Prof. Siddique breathed his last at 10:45 PM in the hospital’s Neuro Intensive Care Unit (ICU). He had been on life support after collapsing on March 6. Initially admitted for treatment, his condition deteriorated, leading to his transfer to the ICU.

His namaz-e-janaza will be held today at Dhanmondi Eidgah Mosque after Jummah prayers, followed by burial at Azimpur Graveyard.

Born in Dhaka on October 26, 1953, Prof. Siddique was a towering figure in academia, media, and public service. He served as Dhaka University’s 27th Vice-Chancellor from 2009 to 2017, guiding the institution through a period of stability and academic progress. His tenure saw a reduction in session jams and a relatively peaceful campus environment.

A graduate of Dhaka College, he pursued Mass Communications and Journalism at Dhaka University, earning his master’s degree at the top of his class. In 1985, he completed a PhD in televised teaching from the University of Mysore, India, with an Indian government scholarship.

His academic career at Dhaka University began in 1980, spanning nearly four decades, during which he mentored and inspired countless students. He also played a prominent role in faculty leadership, serving twice as president and twice as general secretary of the Dhaka University Teachers’ Association (DUTA).

Beyond academia, Prof. Siddique contributed to the media sector, serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) from 2020. He was also a member of the advisory board for the Bangladesh Journalists’ Welfare Trust and led the Bangabandhu Parishad from 2016 to 2023.

His passing has left a deep void among students, colleagues, and admirers. Social media has been flooded with heartfelt tributes, with many sharing memories of his dedication to education and public service.

Prof. Siddique is survived by his wife, daughter, and a vast community of well-wishers.
