Bangladesh cricket icon and former national team captain Tamim Iqbal has been hospitalized after suffering two heart attacks during a Dhaka Premier League match at the BKSP grounds in Savar earlier today.
Tamim, who was leading Mohammedan Sporting Club against Shinepukur Cricket Club at BKSP Ground 3, began experiencing chest pain shortly after the match began. Though he continued to play and even participated in the toss, his condition quickly deteriorated, prompting immediate medical attention at the venue.
After initial first aid proved insufficient, Tamim was taken to KPJ Specialized Hospital in Gazipur, where doctors performed an angiogram and discovered a heart blockage that had triggered two heart attacks, confirmed Dr. Debashish Chowdhury, Chief Medical Officer of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
As an emergency measure, a stent was inserted to restore blood flow, said Dr. Debashish. Tamim is currently stable but remains under close medical supervision as he recovers, he added.
The news was also confirmed via a statement posted on Tamim Iqbal’s official Facebook page at 1:48 pm, which noted that he is now recuperating in the hospital’s Coronary Care Unit (CCU).
Family members, including Tamim’s wife Ayesha Siddique and elder brother, former cricketer Nafees Iqbal, are currently at the hospital alongside him.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the cricketing community. The Bangladesh Cricket Board immediately suspended its 19th board meeting, which was scheduled for noon today, upon receiving news of Tamim’s condition.
