National Citizen Party (NCP) Chief Organiser (North) Sarjis Alam has responded to scrutiny over his motorcade in Panchagarh, following pointed questions raised by the party’s Senior Joint Member Secretary Dr Tasnim Jara.

Questions arose after videos surfaced showing Sarjis’s motorcade of more than 100 vehicles parading through various upazilas in the northern border district during a day of street rallies. The spectacle drew immediate attention.

In an open letter published on Facebook, Dr Tasnim Jara wrote, “You had said publicly, not long ago, ‘I actually have no money at the moment. I am borrowing money from people. This is the reality. I don’t even have a wallet in my pocket.’ In that context, it is natural for people to have questions about how such a big event was possible – how it was financed and managed.”

In a Facebook post this evening, Sarjis offered a detailed response, attributing the scale of the motorcade to local support. “My family, relatives, friends, and many well-wishers from the district brought over half of the vehicles with their own initiatives. The expenses for those vehicles were not borne by us,” he wrote.

Sarjis said that for the remaining 50 vehicles, they paid a rental fee of Tk 6,000 each – totaling Tk 3 lakh. “This amount could have easily been paid by my family even 50 years ago,” he added.

Refuting suggestions of impropriety, Sarjis insisted the event was a spontaneous show of local support. “When I returned to my area, I never imagined that so many cars and so many people, along with their hopes and love, would be waiting for me and supporting me,” he said. “I believe my grandfather alone has left enough for me to run my election campaign.”
