A violent night-time raid on a businessman’s residence in Gazipur’s Kaliganj upazila has left a homemaker dead and two family members in critical condition. The horrific attack unfolded at around 3:00 AM on Saturday, 15 August, in the Nagarvella Gayenbari area under Nagari Union, instilling fear and outrage across the local community.
According to local residents and witnesses, a gang of 10 to 12 men—wearing shorts and concealing their faces with traditional red-and-white towels (gamcha)—took advantage of heavy overnight rain to enter the neighborhood. Before targeting the primary venue, the assailants restricted neighboring residents from coming outside by issuing lethal threats and blockading surrounding homes. The gang then breached the residence of Monjur Miah, a 41-year-old rod and cement merchant, by breaking through a toilet ventilator.
Once inside the home, the intruders launched an immediate and unprovoked attack with sharp weapons, including machetes and knives, indiscriminately hacking at Monjur Miah, his 35-year-old wife Kamrun Nahar, and their 16-year-old daughter Sanjida Akter Mim. Hearing screams from within the house, neighbors attempted to gather outside to assist the family, but the gang hurled bricks and threatened to open fire on anyone who approached. As the crowd outside grew and commotion escalated, the perpetrators fled into the darkness.
Relatives and neighbors rushed to rescue the victims and transported them to a nearby hospital, where attending doctors pronounced Kamrun Nahar dead from severe injuries. Monjur Miah and his teenage daughter, both in critical condition, were transferred to specialized facilities in Dhaka for advanced emergency care. Relatives confirmed that Monjur Miah remains in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) fighting for his life.
The ordeal has left relatives shaken as details of the incident continue to surface:
Asma Begum (60s), Sister-in-law: Recalled receiving news of the robbery at approximately 3:00 AM. Her husband and son rushed to the scene and transported the victims to hospital, where Kamrun Nahar succumbed to her wounds.
Nasir Bepari (70s), Uncle: Described venturing outside with a torch upon hearing screams, only to be confronted by a gang member who threatened to shoot him. He sustained a leg injury after being struck by a brick thrown by the intruders before the gang dispersed.
Mohon Miah, Brother: Disclosed arriving at the residence to find his brother and sister-in-law lying in pools of blood. He noted that Monjur was scheduled to withdraw Tk 20 lakh from a co-operative society to purchase a land plot, speculating that information regarding the potential cash withdrawal may have leaked to the criminals.
Senior law enforcement officers, including representatives from Gazipur District Police, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Detective Branch (DB), and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), conducted forensic examinations at the crime scene.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kaliganj Police Station, Md. Zakir Hossain, confirmed that Kamrun Nahar’s body has been sent to the Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital morgue in Gazipur for an autopsy. Meanwhile, Additional Superintendent of Police (Kaliganj Circle) Md. Asaduzzaman stated that while no cash or valuables have been reported stolen thus far, the sheer brutality of the attack warrants an intensive investigation. Multiple specialized law enforcement units are actively conducting raids to identify and apprehend all members of the gang.
