Bangladesh Require 111 for Victory in First T20 Against Pakistan

A disciplined bowling performance from Bangladesh helped dismiss Pakistan for a modest 110 in 19.3 overs during the first T20 of the three-match series at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka on Sunday.

Fast bowler Taskin Ahmed was the standout performer with the ball, claiming 3 wickets for 22 runs. However, it was Mustafizur Rahman who truly broke Pakistan’s back with an outstandingly economical spell, taking 2 wickets for just 6 runs in his four-over spell.

With the pitch offering ample assistance to the bowlers, Bangladesh’s entire bowling unit capitalised on the conditions to keep the Pakistani batters under constant pressure.

Key Bowling Performance Summary

Bowler Overs Wickets Runs Given Economy Rate
Taskin Ahmed 4 3 22 5.50
Mustafizur Rahman 4 2 6 1.50
Tanzim Hasan Sakib 4 0 29 7.25
Mahedi Hasan 4 1 28 7.00
Shakib Al Hasan 3.3 1 20 5.71

Fakhar Zaman the Lone Fighter for Pakistan

The Pakistan batting line-up struggled against the tight Bangladesh bowling attack. Opener Fakhar Zaman, despite surviving two early chances, was the top scorer for Pakistan with 44 runs off 34 balls, which included 6 fours and 1 six.

  • Abbas Afridi contributed 22 runs, and Khushdil Shah chipped in with 17 runs. However, Pakistan’s top order collapsed under pressure, with five of the top six batters dismissed for single-digit scores, leaving the visitors with limited hope for a competitive total in bowling-friendly conditions.

Pakistan’s Collapse: Key Moments in the Innings

  • Fakhar Zaman’s early reprieve: Fakhar could have been dismissed as early as the first over, but Taskin Ahmed dropped a simple catch at long-on off Mahedi Hasan’s bowling, denying the Bangladesh side a crucial breakthrough. However, Taskin redeemed himself in the following over, dismissing Saim Ayub with a back-of-length delivery.
  • Mahedi Hasan’s persistence paid off: Mahedi’s consistent pressure led to the wicket of Mohammad Haris, giving Bangladesh their second breakthrough.
  • Captain Salman Agha’s rash shot: Pakistan’s captain Salman Agha played a rash shot, giving away his wicket cheaply to Mustafizur Rahman, who then bamboozled Hasan Nawaz with a perfectly executed cutter.
  • Run-outs: Pakistan’s batting disaster deepened when Mohammad Nawaz was run out in the middle overs. Despite Fakhar’s resistance, he too was run out after playing a lone hand, leaving the side in disarray at 70-6 in the 12th over.

Fighting Back but Falling Short

While Abbas Afridi and Khushdil Shah tried to revive the innings with a few powerful shots, including back-to-back sixes from Afridi off Tanzim Hasan Sakib, Pakistan’s total remained well below par. Afridi’s late surge helped Pakistan past the 100-run mark.

But with Mustafizur Rahman conceding just 2 runs in his final two overs, Pakistan were unable to take advantage of the last powerplay, and Bangladesh continued to dominate with the ball.

In the final over, Taskin Ahmed took two wickets, wrapping up the Pakistani innings three balls before the 20-over mark.

Pakistan’s Innings Summary

Batter Runs Balls Fours Sixes Dismissal
Fakhar Zaman 44 34 6 1 Run out

Bangladesh’s Pursuit of 111

With a target of just 111 runs to win, Bangladesh will look to capitalise on the bowling-friendly conditions as they begin their chase. The team will aim to build partnerships and take advantage of Pakistan’s vulnerable bowling attack, which has already shown cracks in the early stages of the game.

Both sides will be keen to take control in what promises to be an exciting conclusion to the first match of the series.
