Erosion on Arial Khan River Threatens Key Embankment and Roadway in Madaripur

Raging erosion on the banks of the Arial Khan River has returned to haunt the residents of Shivchar upazila in Madaripur, threatening vital local infrastructure and leaving thousands of villagers in state of intense anxiety. The surge in river waters triggered severe bank collapse along the Boheratla-Kolatola stretch, causing major damage to both a protective embankment and the primary access road linking the two settlements.

According to local residents, the water levels in the river rose sharply before bank collapse intensified. Within hours, large sections of earth along the Boheratla-Kolatola flood protection embankment gave way and washed away. Simultaneously, a significant portion of the primary road connecting Boheratla Bazaar to Kolatola village collapsed into the riverbed. Villagers fear that unless immediate preventative measures are taken, direct communication between Boheratla Bazaar and surrounding villages will be completely severed, cutting off crucial transport lines for the entire region.

The collapse of this vital infrastructure has disrupted everyday life across several local communities. Local resident Kalam Madbor highlighted that hundreds of commuters rely on the affected road every single day. The corridor serves as the sole transit route for residents of Kolatola and neighboring villages to visit local markets, transport farm produce, attend schools and colleges, and access emergency medical services at healthcare centres. Students, daily traders, and patients requiring immediate medical attention face immense hardship due to the structural damage.

Adding to the urgency of the situation, a local election voting centre located in Ward No. 3 of Boheratla South Union now stands merely a few metres from the expanding riverbank. Community leaders warn that if the current rate of erosion continues unchecked, the infrastructure hosting the voting centre could sink into the riverbed at any moment.

Riverbank erosion is not a novel phenomenon for the residents of Shivchar. Local populations have struggled against the unpredictable nature of the Arial Khan River for over a decade. While the construction of a permanent embankment under the direction of the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) offered temporary relief in recent years, the renewed onset of severe erosion this season has renewed fears of displacement and loss of livelihoods.

Community members attribute the latest wave of destruction to unchecked illegal sand extraction via hydraulic dredgers, alongside unplanned river dredging operations. Local inhabitant Nawab Madbor expressed frustration over the situation, explaining that after years of enduring river erosion, residents believed the BWDB embankment would secure their properties. However, nocturnal illegal sand mining near the shore has severely destabilised the riverbed and undermined the protective structures. Villagers warn that without swift intervention, surrounding homesteads will soon be lost to the river.

In response to the growing crisis, affected residents have called upon government authorities to institute immediate erosion control measures, dismantle illegal dredging operations, and execute urgent repairs on the damaged embankment and road network.

Addressing the situation, Shivchar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) H. M. Ibne Mizan confirmed that the administration has received formal reports regarding the damage along the Arial Khan River. He stated that the Water Development Board has been alerted to the emergency and is expected to deploy protective measures and repair crews within two days. Additionally, he assured the public that prompt administrative action will be taken to crack down on illegal sand dredgers operating in the area.
