Emraan Hashmi Handpicks Akhil Sachdeva for Sequel’s Standout Track
In an era where Bollywood music is frequently assembled through multi-composer lineups and corporate mandates, personal creative calls remain a rarity. Music composer Akhil Sachdeva has revealed that his involvement in the recently released film Awarapan 2 came about through a direct, personal phone call from the film’s lead actor, Emraan Hashmi. Seeking a fresh melodic signature for the track ‘Piya Ghar Aaya – Homecoming’, Hashmi personally invited Sachdeva to join the project, granting him total creative independence to craft something outside his usual musical repertoire.
The original Awarapan, released in 2007, built a formidable cult following largely on the back of its iconic soundtrack. Songs such as ‘Tera Mera Rishta’ and ‘Toh Phir Aao’, composed by Pakistani band Roxen and arranged by Pritam, became defining anthems of the late 2000s. Matching the high artistic legacy of that original album presented a formidable challenge for the creative team behind the sequel. Hashmi, known throughout his two-decade career for having an exceptional ear for chart-topping film music, stepped in directly to ensure the sequel’s album balanced nostalgic reverence with genuine novelty.
Reflecting on the initial collaboration, Sachdeva explained that Hashmi explicitly urged him to step away from predictable templates. The actor asked him to bypass the standard romantic ballads and intense heartbreak numbers that have long defined Sachdeva’s discography, such as his hit ‘Humsafar’ from Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Encouraged to follow his artistic instincts, Sachdeva opted to incorporate distinct Punjabi lyrical elements into the track’s structure. This decision represented a bold departure from the Hindi-Urdu poetic traditions that anchored the music of the first film.
The unconventional choice initially met with significant resistance. Following the preliminary release of the audio, purists and fans of the original franchise voiced sharp criticism across social media platforms, expressing disapproval over the introduction of Punjabi phrasing into the established Awarapan musical universe. Sachdeva acknowledged that he anticipated pushback, noting that he even received aggressive online abuse prior to the film’s theatrical debut.
However, the tide shifted dramatically once audiences experienced the song within the narrative context of the cinema. Upon seeing how ‘Piya Ghar Aaya – Homecoming’ elevated the film’s core character arc and emotional beats, numerous listeners reached out directly to Sachdeva via private messages on social media to apologize for their initial skepticism. The composer noted that seeing listeners revise their opinions after viewing the complete film validated his decision to trust his instincts over immediate public expectations. While acknowledging that classic tracks like ‘Tera Mera Rishta’ hold an untouchable legacy, Sachdeva expressed deep satisfaction that his contribution has emerged as one of the most widely discussed original compositions in the new release.
