A 32-year-old college lecturer who went missing a day earlier was found dead in a pond in Noakhali’s Companiganj Upazila on Monday morning. Local residents discovered the floating body and alerted the authorities, who subsequently recovered the corpse and sent it for an autopsy to Noakhali General Hospital.
The deceased, identified as Samrat Hossain, was a lecturer in the Department of Islamic History at West Bank College in the upazila. He was the third son of Moinul Haq Ratan, a resident of Ward 4 in Rampur Union within Companiganj.
According to local sources, worshippers and villagers spotted the body floating at around 7:00 am on Monday, 17 August, in the pond belonging to the mosque in front of Maulana Ali Ahammad’s house in Ward 4 of Rampur Union. The sight caused immediate panic and grief throughout the neighborhood, as Samrat was well-regarded locally for his academic career and quiet demeanour.
The young educator had mysteriously disappeared on Sunday. Enamul Haq Monju, a close friend of the deceased, revealed that Samrat had telephoned him recently expressing a desire to consult a doctor. Monju noted that Samrat had appeared noticeably distressed and mentally depressed over the preceding week.
When Samrat failed to return home on Sunday, his anxious family members searched various potential locations across the area without success. They eventually reached out to Monju for advice, who urged them to lodge a General Diary (GD) with the local police station to initiate an official search. However, before formal legal steps could be completed, the tragic discovery was made near his homestead.
Commenting on the incident, local Union Parishad Member Md. Enayet praised the late lecturer, describing him as a well-behaved and upright young man whose sudden death has left the local community in deep shock.
Confirming the recovery, the Officer-in-Charge of Companiganj Police Station, Mohammad Nurul Hakim, stated that police officers were dispatched to the scene immediately upon receiving the news. The body was retrieved and transferred to the morgue at Noakhali General Hospital to determine the exact cause of death. Law enforcement officials confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death is underway, and appropriate legal action will follow based on the autopsy findings.
