Life Insurance Advisers Drive Surge in Singapore Policy Purchases

Advisory channels remained the primary route for Singaporeans securing life insurance in the first half of 2026, with Financial Advisory (FA) Representatives and Tied Representatives accounting for 79.4% of all new policies purchased. Data from the Life Insurance Association (LIA), Singapore reveals that these two key channels facilitated a combined 504,951 new policy purchases as individuals actively reviewed their personal protection and long-term wealth needs.

Financial Advisory Representatives achieved the largest share of weighted new business premiums, which expanded by 35.9% year-on-year. Premiums generated through FA Representatives jumped from $777.9 million (S$994 million) in the corresponding period of 2025 to $1.1 billion (S$1.35 billion) in the first six months of 2026. This performance allowed the FA channel to claim 37.3% of total weighted new business premiums and 40.8% of the total sum assured across the market.

Meanwhile, Tied Representatives maintained their status as the single largest distribution channel by policy volume, securing 40.7% of all new policies sold. Industry representatives noted that this dominance underscores the enduring demand for face-to-face engagement and tailored guidance when navigating complex financial decisions. The human element continues to play an essential role for consumers seeking customized coverage plans.

Alternative distribution streams also maintained a presence in the Singaporean insurance landscape. Bank Representatives accounted for 25.8% of the total sum assured, benefiting from established bancassurance partnerships. Online Direct Channels contributed 5.2% of total coverage, reflecting steady uptake among digital-savvy buyers purchasing straightforward protection products. Direct purchases made without any intermediaries accounted for the remaining 0.9% of the market.

Singapore’s life insurance sector has seen sustained momentum, driven by rising awareness surrounding healthcare costs, retirement readiness, and estate planning. The strong growth in weighted premiums across independent advisory networks highlights a broader trend towards holistic financial planning rather than off-the-shelf product selection. As economic volatility and longevity risks remain top-of-mind, policyholders are increasingly seeking professional advice to structure balanced portfolios.

Looking ahead, LIA officials emphasized that the industry will remain focused on managing health insurance sustainability alongside expanding public financial education.
