Bangladesh’s Foreign Exchange Reserves Rise to $37.25 Billion

Bangladesh’s gross foreign exchange reserves have risen to US$37.25 billion, according to the latest data released by Bangladesh Bank on Tuesday, 18 August.

The increase provides a positive indication for the country’s external financial position, particularly at a time when foreign exchange reserves remain closely watched for their role in meeting import payments, supporting international transactions and maintaining confidence in the economy.

According to Bangladesh Bank, the country’s gross foreign exchange reserves stood at US$37.25 billion as of the latest update. However, when calculated under the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) BPM6 methodology, the reserve figure was lower, at US$32.44 billion.

The difference between the two figures reflects the distinct accounting approaches used to measure reserve assets. The gross figure represents the broader stock of foreign exchange reserves, while the BPM6 measure is used as an internationally comparable framework for assessing a country’s external assets and reserve position.

Foreign exchange reserves are a key indicator of a country’s capacity to meet external financial obligations. They are particularly important for an economy such as Bangladesh, where reserves help support the payment of import bills, including those for essential commodities, industrial raw materials, fuel and capital machinery. Adequate reserves also provide a cushion against external financial pressures and sudden movements in the foreign exchange market.

The latest increase comes against the backdrop of continued attention on Bangladesh’s foreign exchange position. In recent years, fluctuations in reserves have been influenced by import demand, export earnings, remittance inflows, foreign loan disbursements and external debt payments. The central bank therefore closely monitors both the gross reserve position and the internationally recognised reserve measurement.

Remittance and export earnings are particularly significant sources of foreign currency for Bangladesh. A sustained improvement in these inflows can strengthen the country’s ability to replenish reserves, while higher import costs or increased external payments can place pressure on them.

The rise to US$37.25 billion in gross reserves is consequently being viewed as a notable development in the country’s external sector. At the same time, the BPM6 figure of US$32.44 billion remains an important benchmark because it provides a more standardised basis for assessing Bangladesh’s reserve position against international reporting practices.

The latest figures highlight the importance of maintaining stable foreign currency inflows and prudent management of external payments as Bangladesh continues to navigate changing global economic conditions.
