Law enforcement agencies have arrested Abdul Latif, the general secretary of the Nasirnagar Upazila unit of the Awami League, during a late-night operation in the capital, Dhaka. The 57-year-old politician was apprehended on Monday night in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Nasirnagar Police Station in Brahmanbaria.
The arrest was confirmed by the Officer-in-Charge of Nasirnagar Police Station, Md Shahinul Islam. According to police records, the case was initially initiated by Sub-Inspector Abdul Khalek, accusing Latif and several associates of planning subversive activities. Following his arrest in Dhaka, security forces escorted him back to Brahmanbaria, where he was formally produced before the court on Tuesday.
Local political sources indicated that Latif had gone into hiding following the major political shift in the country’s governance landscape on 5 August. The news of his apprehension spread rapidly across Nasirnagar, generating widespread discussion and political tension throughout the upazila. As a prominent figure within the regional Awami League structure, Latif played a central role in local party operations prior to the change in administration.
Law enforcement officials disclosed that intelligence surveillance led officers to his hiding spot in Dhaka. The anti-terrorism case centers on allegations of plotting unlawful assemblies, orchestrating violent disruptions, and financing subversive plans aimed at destabilising local law and order.
Police authorities emphasized that security measures across Nasirnagar remain heightened to prevent potential unrest in the wake of the arrest. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether Latif faces additional charges or pending warrants across other police stations in the district.
