A 35-year-old man was found dead in a rice field beside a paved road in Chunarughat upazila of Habiganj on Wednesday morning, with police suspecting that he may have been murdered.
The deceased was identified as Ahammad Ali Sujon, son of Dulal Mia of Dulal Mia’s family in Gazipur Union of Chunarughat. He was married to the daughter of Rashid Mia of Rakhi village in Mirashi Union and had been living at his in-laws’ home as a resident son-in-law after marriage.
Police recovered Sujon’s body from a rice field beside the road in Rakhi village at around 10am on 19 August. Local residents said several agricultural workers were heading to the field to harvest paddy at about 8am when they noticed a man lying motionless among the crops. They informed the local police station after realising that the man appeared to be dead.
A police team led by Sub-Inspector Gias Uddin subsequently went to the scene and recovered the body. Officers examining the deceased reportedly found several blood-stained injuries on different parts of his body.
Chunarughat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Saiful Islam said police had recovered the body after receiving information from local residents. He said multiple injury marks had been found on Sujon’s body and that the circumstances initially pointed towards a possible murder.
The discovery has raised concern among residents of the area, particularly because the body was found in an agricultural field away from the immediate surroundings of a residence. However, police have yet to establish how, when or why the young man died.
Investigators are expected to examine the location where the body was found, speak to local residents and determine whether Sujon had been in contact with anyone before his death. Evidence collected from the scene, along with the condition of the body, will be important in establishing the sequence of events.
Police said a murder case would be filed in connection with the incident. The body is expected to undergo a post-mortem examination, and further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the autopsy and the progress of the investigation.
Authorities have not yet announced any arrests or identified a suspect. The exact cause of death and the circumstances surrounding Sujon’s injuries will become clearer once the forensic examination and police investigation are completed.
