A 35-year-old man died after being brutally beaten by a mob over suspicions of stealing a water pump in Rajbari district. The incident took place late on Tuesday night in Dhepa Majail village under Patta Union in Pangsha Upazila, sparking concern over vigilante justice in the area.
The deceased has been identified as Joj Ali Biswas, son of Shukur Ali Biswas, also known locally as Suray, residing in Majail village under the same union.
According to local residents and law enforcement officials, the confrontation unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday when a group of villagers allegedly caught Joj Ali red-handed attempting to steal a water pump from a residential property in Dhepa Majail. An agitated crowd quickly gathered, isolating the suspect before launching a severe physical assault. The victim was reportedly bound overnight while the beatings continued, leaving him critically injured and unconscious by daybreak.
Upon receiving information about the mob violence on Wednesday morning, a team from Pangsha Model Police Station rushed to the scene. Officers recovered Joj Ali in a precarious state and transported him immediately to the Pangsha Upazila Health Complex for urgent medical treatment. However, the attending physician declared him dead on arrival following preliminary examinations.
Confirming the incident, Moinul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Pangsha Model Police Station, stated that while the immediate trigger was reported as the theft of a water pump, investigators are actively examining whether underlying personal rivalries or prior disputes played a role in the killing. Police have dispatched the body for a formal post-mortem examination to ascertain the precise cause of death. Law enforcement authorities confirmed that a thorough investigation is underway to identify those directly involved in the mob attack and ensure swift legal action against the perpetrators.
