In a terrifying double homicide, two 18-year-old youths were shot dead within minutes of each other in the Labanchara area of Khulna metropolitan city. The incidents occurred on Wednesday evening, 19 August, near the Ashibigha culvert under Labanchara Police Station, sending shockwaves through the local community and leaving residents gripped by fear.
Lethal Assault at Ashibigha Culvert
According to local residents and police sources, Monjurul Islam, locally known as Monju, was walking towards the Ashibigha culvert area to meet friends on Wednesday evening. Out of nowhere, a heavily armed gang consisting of eight to ten unidentified assailants ambushed him, firing several rounds at point-blank range.
Monju sustained at least two gunshot wounds to his body before collapsing on the spot. Local bystanders rushed to his aid and transported him in critical condition to Khulna Medical College Hospital. Upon arrival, the attending physician declared him dead. Monju worked as a sanitary fitting technician and was the son of Khokon Sana, a resident of the Ashibigha neighborhood.
A Second Attack and Mounting Fear
Moments after the initial assault on Monju, the armed group targeted another youth in the exact same location. Najmul Islam, also aged 18, was fired upon by the gang and died from his injuries shortly after. Najmul was the son of local resident Monir Sheikh.
The extraordinary swiftness and proximity of the two killings in broad daylight have triggered intense panic across Labanchara. Shocked residents remained indoors following the shootings, while local business establishments in the immediate vicinity closed down prematurely amidst the escalating tension.
Police Launch Investigation into Double Homicide
Detectives and uniformed personnel arrived at the crime scene shortly after the second shooting to secure the area, collect forensic evidence, and speak with eyewitnesses.
Confirming the double murder, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Labanchara Police Station, Syed Mosharraf Hossain, stated that law enforcement agencies have initiated a comprehensive investigation to determine the motive behind the back-to-back attacks. Police have launched targeted drives across key points in the city to track down and arrest the perpetrators involved in the coordinated killings. Further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
