Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel recovered a cache of illicit weapons and ammunition buried underground during an early morning operation in the dense hilly terrain of Satchhari Reserve Forest, Chunarughat sub-district, Habiganj. Acting on intelligence, troops from the Satchhari Border Outpost of the 55 BGB Battalion executed the raid at approximately 4:30 AM on Thursday, seizing six pistols, seven magazines, and 22 rounds of live ammunition.
The weaponry was uncovered roughly three kilometres inside Bangladeshi territory from border pillar 1978, hidden carefully beneath the soil within dense jungle cover. BGB officials suspect that armed gangs or criminal networks concealed the arms cache for use in terror activities, armed robberies, or other subversion. No suspects were apprehended at the scene, and investigations are ongoing to identify the individuals or syndicate responsible for stockpiling the firearms. Law enforcement officers are in the process of handing over the seized items to the local police station in accordance with statutory protocols.
Commenting on the operation, Lieutenant Colonel Md. Tanjilur Rahman, Commanding Officer of the 55 BGB Battalion, affirmed that the border force remains resolute in curbing the proliferation of illegal arms, defending national sovereignty, and maintaining peace along border zones. He noted that intelligence surveillance and field operations across the forest belt would be intensified to preempt further criminal enterprise.
The Satchhari National Park and surrounding reserve forest, bordering India’s Tripura state, have long required vigilant monitoring by the BGB, the Forest Department, and regional police due to cross-border smuggling risks. BGB records indicate that over the past three months, the 55 Battalion seized smuggled goods and narcotics valued at approximately 4.1 million BDT from the same forest zone. Confiscated contraband included 238 kilograms of Indian cannabis, 2,585 Yaba pills, 59 bottles of liquor, and 21 cattle. Thursday’s discovery has prompted authorities to heighten security patrols throughout the sanctuary.
