Tensions Rise as Group Demands Cancellation of Traditional Boat Race

Tensions are mounting in Beanibazar sub-district, Sylhet, following demands by a local group operating under the banner of “Tawhidi Janata” to cancel a traditional boat race scheduled for 28 August on the Sunai River. Organisers of the long-standing cultural festival remain resolute in their determination to host the event, sparking heated online debates and raising fears of local confrontation.
The annual boat race, organised by the youth of Lauta and Bahadurpur villages within Lauta Union, has historically served as a cherished folk tradition and source of community entertainment. Unlike previous editions, which proceeded without hindrance, this year’s preparations have met with public opposition from individuals campaigning on social media to shut the event down.
A local businessman from the Gangpar area of Lauta Union, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed concern that campaign posts published by local youths, including individuals identified as Jewel and Opu, were inflaming local sentiment and endangering peaceful coexistence. Another resident noted that the race draws hundreds of spectators every year and lamented the threats issued under the religious banner against a celebrated rural pastime.
Opposition to the event consolidated on Thursday during a meeting convened by “Tawhidi Janata Lauta Union” at the Barigram Bazar mosque, where attendees formally demanded the immediate cancellation of the race.
In response to the growing friction, former Lauta Union Parishad Chairman Gous Uddin confirmed that mediation efforts are under way to dialogue with both factions and diffuse the situation peacefully. Meanwhile, incumbent Lauta Union Parishad Chairman Delowar Hossain acknowledged being aware of the ongoing social media dispute, though he stated no formal representations had been lodged directly with his office.
When questioned regarding the potential for unrest, Beanibazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abu Jafar Mohammad Mahfuzul Karim stated he had not received formal notification of the event or the threats but assured that officers would investigate the matter thoroughly and take necessary preventative measures to maintain law and order.
