Gold Prices Hit Record High Crossing BDT 240,000 Mark

Gold prices in Bangladesh have climbed to unprecedented levels following the latest upward revision by trade authorities, with retail markets trading at the newly established rates on Saturday, 22 August. The Bangladesh Jewellers’ Association (BAJUS) announced the price hike on the morning of 20 August, citing a sharp increase in the price of pure gold (pure bullion) and silver in the local market. Under the revised structure, the price of gold per bhori (equivalent to 11.664 grams) increased by up to BDT 3,849, while silver prices saw a minor upward adjustment of BDT 233 per bhori. As per the latest figures, benchmark 22-carat gold is now retailing at BDT 240,628 per bhori. Standard 21-carat gold stands at BDT 229,781, 18-carat gold is priced at BDT 197,355, and traditional method gold has reached BDT 161,196 per bhori.
BAJUS clarified that all jewelry establishments must adhere strictly to these published rates until further notice. Whilst statutory value-added tax (VAT) is included in the base pricing to prevent arbitrary overcharging, jewelers are authorised to apply separate making charges depending on the complexity of the craftsmanship and design. Standard guidelines regarding the exchange and purchase of pre-owned gold ornaments—excluding making charges, stone weights, and VAT—remain unchanged.
This latest adjustment follows a prior price hike on 15 August, when BAJUS raised 22-carat gold by BDT 2,158 to BDT 236,779 per bhori. At that time, 21-carat gold was fixed at BDT 226,165, 18-carat gold at BDT 194,206, and traditional gold at BDT 158,630 per bhori.
The domestic market has experienced extraordinary volatility this year, driven by fluctuations in local bullion availability and international market trends. Domestic gold tariffs have been revised 105 times in 2026, comprising 53 price increases, 51 reductions, and one VAT adjustment. By comparison, gold prices were adjusted 93 times throughout 2025, which saw 64 price hikes and 29 reductions.
