Gulistan remains one of the busiest commercial hubs in Dhaka, teeming with shoppers from dawn until late at night. The livelihoods of thousands of traders and shop employees depend entirely on the bustling markets in this area. However, shopkeepers report growing anxiety over continuous financial pressure from extortion syndicates operating under various pretexts.
According to local shop owners, an influential syndicate known locally as the “Darvesh Ring” controls much of the illegal money collection across these markets. Traders claim that several key figures within this group face past criminal charges, including individuals implicated in the high-profile enforced disappearance of freedom fighter and former ward commissioner Chowdhury Alam. Despite political shifts and changes in government, the network has adapted smoothly, remaining fully active while maintaining its grip on local commerce.
The extortion manifests in numerous ways beyond standard operational costs. Traders are forced to pay extra fees for using space in front of their shops, security charges, and market management fees. Payments are demanded at regular intervals, often at fixed rates. While direct violence is not always threatened, implicit intimidation ensures that few dare to protest. Small traders bear the brunt of this financial drain, struggle to cover rent, utilities, and staff salaries alongside these arbitrary levies. Investigative reporting by major national newspapers, including khaborwala, has brought these concerns to light.
Shop owners are increasingly raising questions regarding accountability and transparency, noting that no formal receipts are issued for the cash collected. In response, traders have urged law enforcement and city authorities to install anonymous complaint boxes throughout all Gulistan markets. This initiative would allow victims to submit information regarding perpetrators, amounts collected, and collection methods without fear of immediate reprisal. Business owners stress that they seek peaceful resolution, professional security, and a fair environment to operate their businesses safely.
