A 65-year-old man was taken into police custody on Saturday afternoon in Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah district following allegations that he sexually assaulted a four-year-old child. The incident occurred around midday in Gokulnagar village, sending shockwaves through the local community.
According to statements gathered from local police and the victim’s family, the young girl was playing near her home when the suspect, identified as Md Abdul Mannan, lured her away. He allegedly used the promise of fruit, specifically lemons, to entice the child into the kitchen of his residence, where the assault took place.
The victim’s mother discovered her daughter missing and rushed to the scene. Upon locating the child, she immediately rescued her and sought assistance from neighbours before alerting the local authorities.
Maheshpur police station Officer-in-Charge Mehedi Hasan confirmed the incident and the prompt response of law enforcement. Officers arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the emergency call and apprehended Abdul Mannan without delay.
Police stated that arrangements were underway to transport the victim to a hospital for a comprehensive medical examination and necessary healthcare support. Meanwhile, legal procedures against the detained suspect are being finalised. Authorities confirmed that he will be produced before a local court once the initial paperwork and investigative formalities are completed.
Crimes against children remain a critical concern for communities across rural Bangladesh, where local law enforcement and social advocates continue to push for swift legal accountability and enhanced community vigilance. Police investigations into the Maheshpur incident are ongoing as authorities gather further evidence to support the formal charges.
