Police in Rangpur have recovered the decomposing bodies of a retired schoolteacher, his wife, and their two children from different parts of their locked multi-storey residence. The deceased have been identified as Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel, 65, his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bala, 50, their daughter Prarthi Chakraborty, 25, and their 12-year-old son, Priyam Chakraborty.
The family home had remained locked from the outside for several days, raising little immediate alarm in the neighbourhood until a foul odour began emanating from the premises. Suspecting something amiss, local residents alerted law enforcement officers, who arrived at the scene and forced open the secured main entrance gate to gain access to the building.
Upon entering, officers discovered a grim scene spread across multiple levels of the house. Nazmul Kader, the Officer-in-Charge of Rangpur Kotwali Police Station, stated that the young boy, Priyam, was found dead beneath a bed inside a second-floor room. The bodies of Pritilata and her daughter Prarthi were discovered lying on the staircase leading up to the third floor, while the body of the retired teacher, Ganapati Chakraborty, was retrieved from the rooftop.
Preliminary assessments suggest the fatalities could be the result of a premeditated murder or an acute domestic tragedy. Specialist crime scene units and forensic experts from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) were deployed to the location to gather physical evidence, collect fingerprints, and document the spatial positioning of the victims.
All four bodies have been transported to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examinations, which authorities hope will establish the exact cause and estimated time of death.
Describing the initial entry into the residence, OC Nazmul Kader explained that the locked main gate had to be breached before officers could search the interior. CID forensic teams are currently processing the scene to retrieve all vital forensic materials. An extensive investigation is underway to determine whether external intruders entered the property or if the incident developed entirely from within the household.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner (DIG) Mohammad Abdul Mabud stated that the case is being handled with the utmost priority. Senior detectives are actively gathering witness statements, examining neighbourhood surveillance footage, and compiling background records of the family to reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.
