Police in Sreemangal, under Moulvibazar district, have arrested a madrasa teacher on charges of brutally torturing and assaulting a nine-year-old student under his supervision. The suspect, identified as Rakibul Hasan Miraj, was apprehended on Sunday afternoon from the Jamia Islamia Boys and Girls Madrasa, situated along the Sindurkhan Road area.
Miraj, a resident of Sungair village in Sreemangal upazila, had been serving as a resident instructor at the Islamic religious school. According to preliminary findings disclosed by investigators, the educator had subjected the young boy to systematic physical and mental abuse for nearly a month. The prolonged mistreatment caused severe distress to the victim, leaving the nine-year-old physically injured and visibly traumatised.
The situation came to a head on Sunday morning when the child reportedly refused to comply with an improper instruction given by the teacher. In response, Miraj flew into a rage and severely beat the student, inflicting bruises and injuries across his body. When details of the assault reached the boy’s family later in the day, the distressed guardians rushed to the local police station to file a formal complaint against the instructor.
Acting on the written allegation, a team of officers from Sreemangal Police Station conducted a raid on the madrasa premises and took Miraj into custody. Emergency medical assistance was arranged for the victim, who was transported to a local hospital where he remains under close medical observation and treatment for his injuries.
Sreemangal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Sarkar Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the arrest, stating that initial medical and physical assessments revealed clear signs of trauma on the child’s body. During interrogation at the police station, the accused confessed to the assault. Legal proceedings are currently under way, with authorities preparing formal charges under relevant child protection and assault statutes to ensure full judicial accountability.
