US Diplomats Tour DU July Museum by Phone Flashlight

A visiting delegation from the United States Embassy in Dhaka was forced to tour the July Museum at the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) using mobile phone flashlights after a sudden power outage plunged the building into darkness on Sunday. The incident occurred shortly after US officials concluded a formal bilateral discussion with student leadership inside the historic union building.

The diplomatic delegation, which included US Embassy Political Officer James A. Steward and Public Diplomacy Officer Scott Hartmann, met with DUCSU Vice President Sadik Kayem before being guided to the museum gallery. The dedicated exhibition space commemorates the fallen martyrs of the July mass uprising, showcasing artefacts and personal belongings of prominent figures such as Abu Sayed, Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mughdo, and Wasim Akram.

According to DUCSU executive member Mohammad Shahinur Rahman, the blackout began almost immediately after the tour commenced and persisted throughout the entire visit. The electricity supply remained cut off even as the diplomatic convoy prepared for departure. Rahman acknowledged the awkwardness of the situation, explaining that while host organizers felt momentarily embarrassed in front of their distinguished international guests, student leaders quickly adapted by switching on their mobile torches to illuminate the historical displays and explain the significance of the exhibits.

Before the unexpected power cut, the two sides engaged in detailed deliberations concerning academic development, capacity-building programmes, and international opportunities for Dhaka University students. Discussions focused heavily on broadening access to higher education and competitive scholarships across American universities, fostering institutional research collaborations, establishing academic exchange programmes, and expanding fellowships for Bangladeshi scholars.

Sadik Kayem stressed the importance of streamlining scholarship processes and increasing financial assistance for talented local students seeking advanced degrees in the United States. He proposed collaborative workshops, guidance seminars, and counselling initiatives to assist prospective applicants with standardized test preparation, English language proficiency, research methodologies, and academic writing. The student leader also advocated for strategic linkages with US-based educational and professional institutions to enhance career development pathways for graduates.

The dialogue touched upon joint public diplomacy initiatives, expanded youth engagement schemes, and leadership development frameworks aimed at fostering cross-cultural understanding between young people in both nations. Expressing optimism about future cooperation, Kayem urged the US Embassy to deepen its institutional support for university programmes, ensuring local students gain greater access to global academic and research networks.
