The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has issued a stern warning to party members contemplating independent or rebel candidacies in upcoming local government elections, confirming that severe disciplinary action will be taken against anyone defying the party line. BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi delivered the caution during an interaction with journalists, outlining the party’s strategic posture and internal expectations.
Addressing reporters, Rizvi explained that candidate selection for the local polls will be determined strictly through consultation with grassroots activists and organisers. Local preferences, candidate merit, public reputation, and past organisational loyalty will serve as key criteria during the nomination vetting process across all tiers of local administration.
To maintain internal cohesion and prevent vote division, the party plans to back a single, consensus candidate in each respective constituency or seat. Rizvi underscored that any member contesting outside official directives or running as an independent will face immediate organisational repercussions, including potential suspension or outright expulsion from the party ranks.
Rizvi instructed leaders across union, upazila, and district committees to carefully scrutinise local aspirants before pledging collective support. Because local government elections are scheduled to proceed without official party symbols, maintaining internal unity and ensuring unambiguous backing for vetted individuals has become a priority for central leadership.
The BNP leader emphasised that maintaining an orderly, disciplined, and coordinated organisation remains the party’s primary operational responsibility. Party workers have been urged to inform the public of people-oriented initiatives and remain closely engaged with local communities. Rizvi concluded that deep engagement with ordinary citizens serves as the most effective safeguard against misconduct, maintaining that the BNP will not endorse actions that run contrary to the broader public interest.
