Two serving female Union Parishad (UP) members have been taken into custody by the District Detective Branch (DB) of police in Rajbari after being caught in possession of 30 Yaba tablets.
The arrests were officially confirmed late on Tuesday night by Md Mofizul Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Rajbari DB Police. The suspects were identified as Mst Hamida Khatun, 47, wife of Abdul Mannan Mondal from Mohanpur village, and Sajeda Begum, 40, wife of Kadar Ali Mondal from Char Kultia village. Both women hold elected positions in the Majhbari Union Parishad under Kalukhali Upazila. Hamida Khatun represents the reserved seats for Wards 1, 2, and 3, whilst Sajeda Begum serves as the reserved ward member for Wards 7, 8, and 9.
According to details released by the detective police, an operational team led by Sub-Inspector (SI) Shimul Sheikh was conducting a targeted anti-narcotics drive in the Pangsha Model Police Station jurisdiction on Tuesday afternoon. Acting on precise intelligence, detectives intercepted the two female public representatives on a paved road directly in front of the Wood Ward Furniture store on College Road within Pangsha Municipality. A subsequent search led to the recovery of 30 contraband Yaba pills from their possession, resulting in their immediate detention.
Rajbari DB Police OC Md Mofizul Islam confirmed that formal legal proceedings have been initiated against both individuals under the Narcotics Control Act, and they will be produced before the court following preliminary interrogation.
The news of the law enforcement action has stirred considerable conversation within the local administration and community, given the political standing of the suspects. When approached for comment, Kazi Shariful Islam, Chairman of the Majhbari Union Parishad, acknowledged that he had been informed through local channels about the arrest of two female council members from his parishad. However, he noted that local administrative authorities had not yet issued a formal written notification regarding their legal status or the criminal charges brought against them. Law enforcement officials reiterated that anti-narcotic drives across Rajbari district will continue without regard to the public standing or influence of those involved.
