Ambulance Driver Detained Over Attempted Desecration of Deceased Woman

Police in Lohagara, Narail, have detained an ambulance driver after local residents caught him attempting an act of necrophilia inside his vehicle with the body of a young woman. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Sagar Sheikh, was subjected to a public beating by incensed locals before being handed over to law enforcement officers on Sunday evening.

Sagar Sheikh, son of the late Kamrul Sheikh from the Laxmipasha oil pump area under Lohagara upazila, was taken into custody by a team from Lohagara Police Station directly from the front of the Lohagara Upazila Health Complex.

According to family members of the deceased, the victim, Sadia Akter Lamia, died by suicide on Saturday morning after hanging herself with a scarf at her residence in Chhagalchhera village, situated within Lohagara Union. Local police subsequently retrieved the body to initiate formal inquest procedures. Late that night, the corpse was placed inside an ambulance parked outside the police station complex to await transport for an autopsy.

The victim’s family alleged that late into the night, Sagar Sheikh remained inside the parked vehicle with the body. Sadia’s mother grew suspicious and went to check on the ambulance, discovering the driver in the middle of attempting an immoral act with the deceased.

Speaking about the disturbing discovery, the victim’s mother stated that Sagar Sheikh had removed her daughter’s clothing inside the vehicle. She further alleged that the driver had deliberately draped a towel (gamchha) across the ambulance windows to obstruct the view from the outside and conceal his actions. Shocked by what she saw, her immediate outcry alerted nearby locals, who quickly gathered, seized the driver, and administered a beating before alerting the authorities.

Confirming the arrest, Inspector (Investigation) Ajit Kumar Roy of Lohagara Police Station stated that police units dispatched to the spot promptly placed Sagar Sheikh under arrest. The officer assured that formal legal proceedings are currently underway, and strict legal action will be pursued against the suspect in connection with the crime.
