Police in Gazipur have arrested five relatives of a detained local Awami League affiliate leader after they staged an unexpected demonstration and chanted political slogans inside the premises of Tongi East Police Station. The incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon, 30 August, as law enforcement officers were preparing to transfer the suspect to court, creating a sharp breach of security within the police complex.
The disruption began following the arrest of Abdul Matin, 47, president of the Ward 47 unit of the Krishak League in Tongi, an associate body of the Awami League. Matin had been apprehended by police officers during a targeted raid conducted on Saturday night. As officers escorted him across the station courtyard to board a prison van for his scheduled court appearance on Sunday, his family members and supporters gathered on the grounds suddenly began shouting political slogans, including “Joy Bangla”, “Joy Bangabandhu”, and “Joy Jononetri Sheikh Hasina”.
Reacting swiftly to the illegal political manifestation within a secure government installation, police personnel deployed on duty moved in immediately, isolating and detaining five individuals from the crowd.
Those taken into custody have been identified as Md Mahdi Hasan, 26, son of Atiqur Rahman; Harunur Rashid, 34, son of the late Abdur Rauf; Johura Begum, 55, daughter of Mojibur Rahman; Sharmin Sultana, 37, daughter of Md Kawsar Ali; and Shahida Akter, 36, daughter of the late Shahid Mia. All five detainees are residents of the Morkun area within Tongi, Gazipur, and are close relatives of the arrested Krishak League official.
Following the detentions, Sub-Inspector (SI) Habibur Rahman of Tongi East Police Station filed a formal case under the Anti-Terrorism Act as the primary complainant. The legal filing officially records the arrest of the five named individuals, while explicitly naming two additional suspects and listing another 10 to 12 unnamed persons as accused co-conspirators involved in the station yard disturbance.
Confirming the law enforcement action, Maksudul Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Tongi East Police Station, stressed that political demonstrations inside a law enforcement facility are completely intolerable. He stated that raising partisan slogans within police premises directly compromised station security and disrupted administrative functions, reassuring the public that strict legal measures under existing statutory frameworks are being actively pursued against all those involved.
