The United States has carried out targeted airstrikes against two rocket launchers belonging to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on Larak Island, escalating naval tensions in the sensitive Persian Gulf region. Following the bombardment on Sunday, 30 August, the IRGC publicly acknowledged the damage to its assets and pledged to launch a retaliatory response against those responsible.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, a senior US official disclosed that the American military launched the preventive strikes after intelligence confirmed the two IRGC rocket launchers were actively preparing to attack two US mine-laying vessels navigating nearby waters. According to reports by Al Jazeera, US armed forces maintain continuous surveillance over the strategic maritime corridor, remaining fully prepared to deploy force to safeguard commercial and naval shipping throughout the Strait of Hormuz.
Local residents on Larak Island, situated near the mouth of the Strait of Hormuz, reported hearing powerful explosions reverberating across the territory as the strikes hit their targets. Iran’s Fars News Agency corroborated reports of the detonation, confirming that military installations on the island had been struck.
Confirming the attack on its positions, the IRGC released a statement acknowledging that several of its fighters as well as local civilian residents lost their lives in Sunday’s bombardment. Iranian state broadcasting networks reported that the revolutionary force has sworn to punish those behind the strike, describing the act as an unprovoked aggression against sovereign territory.
Despite acknowledging casualties on the ground, the IRGC has not yet released specific figures regarding the precise number of military personnel or civilians killed during the operation.
