An eight-year-old child has lost their life in Mumbai after a woman driver, allegedly distracted while talking on her mobile phone, ran over the young pedestrian. Following the fatal incident, local law enforcement officers arrested the driver and initiated formal legal proceedings against her.
The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, 30 August, along John Baptist Road in the Bandra neighbourhood of Mumbai. According to reports cited by NDTV, the vehicle struck the young victim at high speed, knocking the child to the ground before running them over.
Police officers identified the driver as 45-year-old Megha Rawal, a resident of Bandra. Investigating officers noted that Rawal was driving her car at excessive speed through the residential street while distracted by a phone conversation, leaving her unable to react in time when the child appeared in the vehicle’s path.
The impact left the eight-year-old child with severe injuries. Local residents and emergency services rushed to the scene to assist, transferring the victim immediately to the nearby Holy Family Hospital for urgent medical treatment. However, despite emergency intervention, attending doctors declared the child dead upon arrival due to the severity of the trauma sustained.
Police authorities registered a case against Rawal under Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way), and 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), alongside Section 184 (dangerous driving) of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The tragedy has sparked renewed concern over distracted driving and excessive speeding within densely populated residential areas across Mumbai. Densely packed urban streets in Bandra, often lined with pedestrians and children, leave minimal margin for driver error. Traffic safety advocates have repeatedly warned about the grave hazards of mobile phone usage behind the wheel, which severely impairs reaction times and driver awareness.
Officers at the local police station confirmed that Rawal remains in custody as investigators gather witness testimonies, examine surrounding Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) footage, and reconstruct the exact sequence of events leading up to the collision. Further police inquiries remain ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
