An ambulance driver has been detained in Narail’s Lohagara after the family of a deceased housewife accused him of attempting an indecent act with her body inside an ambulance.
The incident reportedly took place late at night after the body of 22-year-old Sadia Akter Lamia was placed in the vehicle for transportation to the police station as part of the legal process. The family alleged that the driver, identified as Sagar Sheikh, was caught in the act by Sadia’s mother.
According to local residents and police sources, Sadia, a housewife from Chhagolchhira village in Lohagara Union, died by suicide on Saturday morning after allegedly hanging herself with a scarf. Police later recovered her body from the scene.
Following the recovery, the body was placed inside an ambulance so that it could be taken to the police station for the necessary legal procedures. Family members alleged that Sagar was alone inside the ambulance late that night when he attempted to behave indecently with the deceased woman’s body.
Sadia’s mother told those present that she discovered the alleged incident after approaching the ambulance. She claimed that Sagar had removed part of her daughter’s clothing and was attempting to commit an indecent act.
She also alleged that the windows of the ambulance had been covered with towels so that people outside could not see what was happening inside.
The incident reportedly drew the attention of local residents, who gathered at the spot after the allegation emerged. They detained Sagar and assaulted him before informing the police. Officers subsequently took him into custody and brought him to the police station.
Sagar Sheikh is the son of the late Kamrul Sheikh of the Lakshmipasha petrol pump area in Lohagara.
The accused was detained at around 7.30pm on Sunday (30 August) in front of Lohagara Upazila Health Complex. Police have not yet disclosed further details about the investigation or any statement given by the accused.
The allegations have prompted concern locally because the incident reportedly occurred while the deceased woman’s body was awaiting transportation for the required legal procedures. However, the allegations remain subject to investigation, and the circumstances surrounding the incident will have to be established through the legal process.
Lohagara police station’s Inspector (Investigation) Ajit Kumar Roy said on Monday (31 August) that Sagar Sheikh had been detained and that legal action would be taken against him.
Police are expected to proceed with the case in accordance with the applicable law, while further details will emerge as the investigation progresses.
