Haider Akbar Khan Rono remains a distinctive figure in the history of Bangladesh’s left-wing politics, democratic movements and the Liberation War. A politician, organiser, political thinker and prolific writer, he devoted much of his life to causes centred on democracy, secularism, equality and social justice.
Born on 31 August 1942 into a prominent family, Rono entered politics while studying physics at the University of Dhaka. He became involved with the Communist Party during his student years, at a time when political activism in Pakistan was increasingly shaped by opposition to military rule, economic inequality and political repression.
His public political journey gained prominence in the early 1960s. He took an active role in the movement against the military regime established in 1958 and emerged as an important figure in the student movement. He also served as general secretary of the Pakistan Students Union, becoming closely associated with campaigns demanding democratic rights and greater political and economic justice.
As political consciousness grew in what was then East Pakistan, Rono remained involved in movements against exploitation and discrimination. During the Liberation War of 1971, he played an important role as an organiser and leader. His political commitment was closely linked to his belief that independence should lead to a society based on equality, democratic rights and freedom from exploitation.
The struggle did not end with Bangladesh’s independence. Rono continued to participate in political movements, including the prolonged campaign against military authoritarianism between 1982 and 1990. He was among the organisers and leaders associated with the broader movement that eventually culminated in the mass uprising of 1990 and the fall of the military-backed regime.
Throughout his political career, Rono remained associated with the Communist Party of Bangladesh and served as a member of its Politburo. He continued to advocate democratic governance, secularism, social equality and a society free from exploitation. For him, politics was not simply a pursuit of office or influence; it was a lifelong commitment to an ideological vision.
Rono’s contribution extended well beyond political organisation. He had a deep interest in history, philosophy, politics and social thought, and wrote extensively on these subjects. Thirteen of his books were published, reflecting his efforts to explain political developments and social questions through sustained intellectual engagement. His writing established him as an important contributor to Bangladesh’s tradition of political and social thought.
His intellectual contribution was formally recognised when he received the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 2021. The honour added to a body of work shaped by decades of political experience, historical observation and engagement with questions of society and human emancipation.
Despite his long involvement in contentious political struggles, Rono was widely remembered for his modest lifestyle and unassuming personality. Colleagues and political associates described him as courteous, approachable and warm-hearted. He maintained a reputation for simplicity and personal integrity, while remaining firmly committed to his political principles.
Rono died on 10 May 2024, aged 81. His death marked the end of a political life spanning more than six decades, from the student movements of the 1960s through the Liberation War and the democratic struggles of independent Bangladesh.
