A festive outing ended in tragedy in Jhikargachha, Jhashore, after two young siblings lost their lives in a fatal road collision while visiting Durga Puja pavilions with their parents. The fatal accident occurred when a passenger-carrying battery-operated van collided head-on with a cattle-transporting three-wheeler, locally known as a Nasimon.
The incident took place at around 6:00 pm on Monday, 19 October 2026, along Council Road in the Fultala area under Magura Union of the upazila.
The deceased were identified as ten-year-old Shobhan and his three-year-old sister Disha, children of Sadhan Kumar from Mishrideara village in Jhikargachha. The driver of the Nasimon and a fellow passenger sustained severe injuries in the impact and were rushed to medical facilities for emergency treatment.
According to family sources, Sadhan Kumar, a lecturer at Jhashore Cantonment College, set out on Monday afternoon with his wife and two young children to tour various decorated pavilions (pandals) across the district to celebrate the festival. They were travelling in a passenger van to visit nearby shrines when the speeding Nasimon collided with their vehicle at Fultala.
The violent collision threw the family onto the tarmac. Local residents rushed to the scene immediately to assist, transporting the victims to the Jhikargachha Upazila Health Complex. However, attending physicians pronounced the two siblings dead on arrival.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jhikargachha Police Station, Golam Kibria Hasan, confirmed the details of the crash, stating that the bodies of the two children are currently kept at the upazila health complex morgue. Police officers have commenced legal proceedings and are moving to impound the vehicles involved in the collision. The sudden loss of the two young children has cast a deep pall of gloom over the local community during the festive season.
