An autonomous vehicle developed in Pakistan crashed directly into a stationary police car during a live demonstration in Islamabad, sparking widespread amusement and social media commentary.

The driverless vehicle, conceived and built by Abbottabad-based technology enthusiast Ehsan Zafar, was being showcased in the capital’s high-security D-Chowk area when the mishap occurred. Muhammad Alizah, a journalist covering the demonstration for Dawn, explained that a sudden technical malfunction triggered by a disruption in internet and satellite connectivity caused the vehicle to lose steering and braking control.

Footage captured at the scene shows the automated car continuing its forward momentum and colliding with the law enforcement vehicle even as manual brakes were applied. Because the test took place in a cordoned-off, secure zone, the collision resulted in minor damage and no injuries. Observers noted that a similar failure on a crowded public thoroughfare could have led to severe consequences.

The incident quickly drew international attention after Indian actor Ranvir Shorey reshared the video clip online alongside humorous remarks. Social media users across Pakistan also flooded digital platforms with witty memes and lighthearted criticism regarding the unexpected outcome of the indigenous tech showcase.

Alizah urged the public to view the mishap as a responsible cautionary tale rather than grounds for harsh ridicule, emphasising the critical need for rigorous safety measures and fail-safe protocols during experimental technology research.
