A student of Feni Polytechnic Institute has been taken into police custody after allegedly posting obscene and derogatory remarks on Facebook concerning female students and the institution’s principal.
The student, identified as Morshed Alam Adib, is a third-semester student in the Electrical Department. He is also reportedly an active worker of Islami Chhatra Shibir’s unit at the institute.
The incident took place at around 11pm on Monday, 31 August. According to fellow students, Adib allegedly published a post from his personal Facebook account containing obscene comments about students living in the women’s hostel. The post reportedly came to the attention of other students, triggering anger on the campus.
Students subsequently detained Adib at the hostel and informed the college authorities about the incident. Teachers later went to the hostel to assess the situation and verify the allegations. During questioning, Adib reportedly admitted responsibility for the post and apologised to those concerned.
He was subsequently handed over to the police.
Rubel Moghol, convener of Feni Polytechnic Chhatra Dal, said he was outside the campus when the incident occurred. After receiving the news, he returned to the institute and tried to calm the students. He also informed members of the teaching staff about the situation.
Mushfiqur Rahman, a fellow student, said offensive remarks concerning female classmates were unacceptable. He also claimed that Adib was an active Shibir worker on campus and called for his expulsion from the institute.
Rupak Kanti, vice-principal of Feni Polytechnic Institute, confirmed that allegations had been made against the student over a Facebook post containing obscene remarks about female students and the principal. He said Adib accepted responsibility during questioning and apologised.
According to the vice-principal, the college has not yet filed a case or formal complaint against the student, taking his future into consideration. His family has been informed of the incident and is expected to come to the institute, after which he may be handed over to them.
The administration is scheduled to hold a meeting on Tuesday morning to discuss the matter. The meeting is expected to consider the allegations and determine what institutional action should be taken against the student.
The incident has also brought renewed attention to the way students use personal social media accounts and the potential consequences when posts concern fellow students or members of an educational institution. While the immediate issue centres on the alleged Facebook post, any disciplinary decision will ultimately depend on the college administration’s assessment of the incident and the applicable institutional procedures.
For now, the student remains at the centre of an ongoing administrative process, with the college authorities expected to decide on the next course of action following their scheduled meeting.
