Bangladesh has registered five additional dengue-related fatalities over the past 24 hours, taking the national death toll from the mosquito-borne viral disease past the 100 mark this year. Official statistics released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reveal that 1,324 new patients were admitted to hospitals across the country during the same one-day period.
The latest deaths highlight the ongoing spread of the vector-borne disease in both urban centres and rural regions. Among the five recent fatalities, two occurred within the Dhaka South City Corporation area. One death each was reported in the Dhaka North City Corporation zone, Chittagong Division, and Mymensingh Division.
Since the beginning of the year on 1 January, health authorities have recorded a cumulative total of 37,170 dengue hospitalisations alongside 102 confirmed fatalities. Dhaka South City Corporation remains the worst-affected zone, accounting for 36 deaths. Khulna Division follows with 18 deaths, whilst Dhaka North City Corporation has logged 13 fatalities. Mymensingh Division reported 10 deaths, Barisal Division 9, and Chittagong Division 7. Meanwhile, Rajshahi Division recorded 4 fatalities, followed by 3 deaths in the broader Dhaka Division outside the two city corporations. Rangpur and Sylhet divisions have registered one death each.
Hospital admissions over the past 24 hours reflect widespread transmission across multiple regions. Dhaka district, excluding the city corporations, reported the highest daily load with 298 new hospitalisations. Khulna Division recorded 246 admissions, while Dhaka North and South city corporations logged 141 and 138 new patients, respectively. Chittagong Division admitted 139 patients, Barisal 121, Rajshahi 114, Mymensingh 87, Rangpur 34, and Sylhet 5.
August proved to be the most severe month of the current outbreak so far. Hospitals treated 20,536 dengue patients during August alone, with the month recording 43 deaths—the highest monthly tally of the year.
Bangladesh has formally tracked dengue hospitalisation and mortality data since 2000. The country experienced its most devastating outbreak in 2023, when hospitalisations reached an all-time high of 321,179 and total fatalities soared to 1,705. The following year also saw significant pressure on the healthcare system, with total infections topping 102,000 and over 400 deaths recorded nationwide. The current escalation underscores the persistent public health challenge posed by the Aedes mosquito vector during and immediately following the monsoon season.
