Former Burichong Upazila Chairman and Awami League Leader Detained

Police have arrested Sajjad Hossain Swapan, former chairman of Burichang Upazila Parishad and Joint General Secretary of Comilla South District Awami League, from his residence in Comilla city.
A team from Kotwali Police Station raided his home, ‘S H Mansion’, located on the western bank of Dharmasagar in Comilla city, on Friday afternoon, taking him into custody following intelligence tracking.
Sajjad Hossain, son of the late Ayet Ali of Bakhshimul village in Burichang upazila, served as the Burichang Upazila Parishad Chairman in 2009. Locally recognised as a close loyalist of former Finance Minister A. H. M. Mustafa Kamal and former Railways Minister Mazibul Hoque, he held significant political sway within the district’s party structure over the past decade.
Law enforcement officials stated that following the fall of the Awami League-led government in August 2024, Sajjad Hossain went into hiding to evade arrest. However, he gradually resumed public movement and began utilising digital platforms to coordinate local party activities. He had been staying at his Comilla city residence for a week prior to his arrest. Five days before his apprehension, he uploaded a group photograph featuring local party activists to his personal Facebook account, which drew the attention of intelligence agencies.
Police sources indicated that Sajjad Hossain was operating from his residence to regroup local party cadres and reorganise political activities across the district. Investigators suspect he was playing a behind-the-scenes role in organising several unannounced political processions and gatherings in Comilla in recent weeks.
Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Touhidul Anwar confirmed that Sajjad Hossain was named as an accused in a case filed with Kotwali Police Station concerning violent incidents during the July-August student-led anti-discrimination movement. Following his arrest on Friday evening, police presented him before a Comilla magistrate’s court on Saturday morning. The court rejected his bail petition and remanded him in custody, after which prison authorities escorted him to Comilla Central Jail.
