The deceased have been identified as 70-year-old Abu Siddique Patwary, his eight-year-old grandson Piyas, and his six-year-old granddaughter Popi Akter. Abu Siddique was the son of Abdul Mannan Patwary of Shakchar Union. Piyas was the son of Siddique’s son Abdul Aziz, while Popi was the daughter of his daughter Sumi Akter. The sudden loss of three family members in a single afternoon has cast a dark shadow of grief over the entire village.

Eyewitnesses and local residents reported that Abu Siddique went to the pond in front of his home accompanied by his two young grandchildren to bathe. Shortly after stepping into the water, the elderly man submerged himself for a dip. When he failed to resurface after an unusually long time, the two children grew concerned and entered the deeper water to search for their grandfather. Lacking the ability to swim or navigate the depth, both Piyas and Popi quickly succumbed to the water and drowned alongside him.

Distraught family members and neighbours eventually noticed their absence and initiated a search in the area. Approximately an hour after the incident occurred, locals managed to retrieve the lifeless bodies of all three victims from the bottom of the pond. Community members suspect that Abu Siddique suffered a sudden medical emergency, potentially a stroke, while submerged, rendering him unable to surface. The innocent attempts of his young grandchildren to rescue him ultimately led to their untimely deaths.

Commenting on the tragedy, Mehdi Hasan Faruk, a member of Ward 1 of Shakchar Union Council, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing the incident as an appalling tragedy for the community. Officer-in-Charge of Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station, Waheed Parvez, confirmed that police personnel were dispatched to the location immediately upon receiving information about the deaths. He added that officers are speaking with the bereaved family to complete all necessary legal formalities regarding the incident.
