Afghan pop icon and human rights campaigner Aryana Sayeed has embarked on an exclusive female-only European concert tour, using her music as a rallying cry against the systematic oppression of women under Taliban rule. Titled ‘Ladies Only’, the tour aims to unite the widespread Afghan diaspora while ensuring the plight of millions of disenfranchised girls and women back home remains firmly in the international spotlight.
The musician kicked off the series in Rotterdam at the historic Laurenskerk on Friday, 4th September. Her itinerary continues across key European hubs, including Stockholm, Hamburg, and Wiesbaden near Frankfurt.
In a recent interview with the pan-European news channel Euronews, Sayeed revealed that the concept for a women-only space had been maturing in her mind for nearly four years. The catalyst was the Taliban’s chaotic return to power in August 2021, an event that instantly stripped Afghan women of their fundamental liberties. Since the fall of Kabul, the regime has banned female citizens from attending secondary schools and universities, barred them from most forms of employment, and even restricted their access to public parks, gyms, and beauty salons.
Often hailed as ‘The Voice of Afghanistan’, Sayeed was previously a judge on hit national television talent shows like The Voice Afghanistan. Forced to flee her homeland during the 2021 evacuation, she now operates from exile, utilizing social media platforms and her advocacy organisation DEFAW (Defenders of Equality, Freedom and Advancement for Women) to maintain direct channels with those still trapped under the regime.
The concert series is designed to serve as both a safe haven for displaced Afghan women and a platform for political resistance. By restricting the audience strictly to women, Sayeed creates a rare venue where attendees can express themselves freely without fear or religious surveillance.
Through her ongoing advocacy and musical performances, Sayeed seeks to restore a sense of agency to women navigating what she describes as Afghanistan’s darkest era, amplifying the voices of millions who have been forcibly silenced.
