Businessman Attacked in Kaliganj, Keraniganj, for Refusing to Pay Extortion Money

A prominent apparel trader in South Keraniganj has been violently attacked after refusing to yield to illegal extortion demands, sparking widespread outrage and safety concerns across one of Bangladesh’s busiest commercial districts. The victim, Md. Siraj, proprietor of Liza Siraj Garments in Aganagar, was ambushed in broad daylight near his business premises in what local sources describe as a premeditated attempt on his life.
According to formal complaints lodged by the victim’s representatives, the assault was orchestrated and executed by Imran Hossain Raj and Samrat Hossain. The duo, identified as the sons of notorious local criminal Tariqulla Tariq, allegedly led a gang of armed accomplices to carry out the targeted strike. The violent outbreak occurred in the heart of Aganagar, a neighbourhood within Kaliganj that serves as the nerve centre for the nation’s domestic readymade garment sector.
For decades, the Aganagar and Kaliganj market belt in South Keraniganj has functioned as the primary wholesale hub for apparel, drawing thousands of retail merchants, fabric buyers, and traders from every corner of the country each day. Millions of taka change hands daily within these densely packed trading lanes, making it an essential driver of the local economy. However, the commercial prosperity of the area has long made it a lucrative target for criminal syndicates seeking to extract regular protection money from local shopkeepers.
Residents and fellow shopkeepers report that the accused family has maintained an oppressive presence in the area for a considerable period, systematically subjecting local business owners to extortion, physical harassment, and death threats. Mr Siraj’s firm refusal to comply with their financial demands reportedly triggered the brutal retaliation. Local traders pointed out that when an established and respected figure is so brazenly targeted outside his own establishment, smaller shop owners and visiting buyers are left feeling completely defenceless.
The attack has sent shockwaves through the local business community, raising severe anxieties over public safety and the stability of the commercial environment. Leaders of local trade associations have strongly condemned the assault, warning that unchecked extortion and violence threaten to scare away out-of-town wholesale buyers, thereby inflicting lasting damage on the regional economy.
Demanding immediate government intervention, local merchants and residents have urged law enforcement agencies to conduct a swift and impartial investigation, free from any political interference or local influence. They have called for the immediate arrest of Imran Hossain Raj, Samrat Hossain, and their co-conspirators, alongside the implementation of permanent police patrols to guarantee the safety of business owners throughout the Aganagar garment market.
