Health Minister Scraps Community Clinics in Major Healthcare Overhaul

In a bid to fundamentally reshape Bangladesh’s public health framework, Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain has announced the complete rebranding and restructuring of the nation’s rural healthcare system. Under the new policy, the existing ‘Community Clinic’ network will be abolished and re-established as ‘Family Welfare Centres’. Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration of a foundation-backed mobile clinic initiative in Brahmanbaria’s Kasba upazila on Wednesday, the minister outlined a sweeping reform agenda designed to modernise rural infrastructure, integrate advanced robotic technology, and reduce reliance on overseas medical treatment.
Addressing attendees at the Kasba upazila premises at 1:00 pm, Mr Hossain launched a scathing critique of the previous administration, accusing former officials of financial plunder and systematic corruption that left public medical institutions severely degraded. He stated that removing the legacy of past political governance was a necessary step towards restoring integrity to public health services. Under the overhauled structure, qualified medical doctors will be posted directly to these primary care centres to ensure that rural populations receive consistent, high-quality medical attention.
Central to this policy shift is an upcoming infrastructure procurement campaign aimed at rebuilding facilities across sub-district and village levels. The minister revealed that construction tenders worth 16,000 crore BDT will be officially issued within the next fortnight. This capital investment will fund the development and upgrading of upazila health complexes, union-level facilities, and rural family welfare centres across the country.
Outlining a two-year target for complete systemic transformation, Mr Hossain expressed firm confidence in the capability of local medical personnel. He emphasised that Bangladeshi doctors possess talent equal to their international peers, pledging that the government’s strategic upgrades would eliminate the need for citizens to travel abroad—particularly to neighbouring India—for specialised care. By expanding domestic capacity, the ministry aims to ensure that comprehensive medical treatments remain available at home.
Beyond primary care, the administration plans to introduce sophisticated medical technology into tertiary healthcare institutions. Robotic surgery will soon be launched across six prominent state-run hospitals, including Dhaka Medical College Hospital and the National Institute of Neurosciences. The minister explained that while robotic systems will execute delicate surgical operations, experienced human surgeons will retain complete control over the equipment at all times.
The launching event was attended by several local dignitaries, including Mushfiqur Rahman, Member of Parliament for the Brahmanbaria-4 constituency (Kasba and Akhaura), alongside Brahmanbaria Deputy Commissioner Abu Sayeed and Superintendent of Police Jalal Uddin Fahim.
