SAVAR — Law enforcement agencies have apprehended nine individuals, including the primary suspect, following the fatal beating of Special Branch (SB) Police Sub-Inspector Altaf Hossain in Aminbazar, Savar.
The arrests were confirmed on Monday afternoon by Saiful Alam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Savar Model Police Station. Joint drives conducted across Aminbazar and the launch terminal area of Munshiganj Sadar led to the capture of the suspects. Police have produced all nine named accused before the court, seeking a ten-day remand for the principal suspect, Jahirul Islam, and seven-day remands for the remaining eight.
The other suspects have been identified as Alauddin (26), Apon (30), Jihad (20), Imran (26), Nur Mohammad Rudra (24), Md Rakib Miah (28), Tsabbir Ahmed (24), and Md Wasim (40), all residents of the local Aminbazar locality. According to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), one of the arrested men already faces three drug-related cases at Savar Police Station.
The fatal altercation occurred on the evening of 5 September between 8:30 pm and 11:00 pm in the Bardeshi area of Aminbazar. A dispute over parking an auto-rickshaw escalated when a group of men began physically assaulting a local garage owner. Sub-Inspector Altaf Hossain (58), accompanied by his son Ariful, stepped in to protest against the assault. An argument ensued between the aggressors and the officer.
When the group turned hostile towards him, Sub-Inspector Hossain identified himself as a serving police officer. Rather than deterring the assailants, the revelation intensified their aggression. Fearing for their lives, Hossain and his son fled into a nearby garment factory operated by the officer’s son.
The attackers summoned an additional 15 to 20 accomplices, breached the factory gate, and stormed the premises. Armed with native weapons and wooden sticks, the mob launched a violent assault on both Hossain and Ariful while vandalising factory machinery and office furniture.
Local residents rushed the severely injured father and son to Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in Dhaka, where attending physicians declared Sub-Inspector Hossain dead on arrival.
Following the incident, the victim’s widow filed a murder case with Savar Model Police Station, naming 15 individuals alongside several unidentified suspects. OC Saiful Alam confirmed that multi-agency joint operations are continuing under senior direction to trace and detain the remaining fugitives linked to the murder.
