Officers from the Special Response Battalion (SRB) have arrested a primary suspect in Dhaka in connection with the sensational murder of local political leader Humayun Kabir in Khulna. The suspect, identified as 43-year-old Fayek Sheikh, was apprehended during a joint law enforcement operation on Tuesday evening in the Pallabi area of the capital.
Acting on specific intelligence, a joint team comprising personnel from SRB-6 and SRB-4 executed a raid at approximately 7:50 pm on Road 8/77, Block E, Section 12 under Pallabi Police Station. Fayek Sheikh, listed as the third principal accused in the First Information Report (FIR), is the son of Sheikh Idris Ali and a resident of West Rayermahal within Khalishpur Police Station jurisdiction in Khulna. He had reportedly been in hiding in Dhaka to evade arrest following the fatal attack.
The victim, Humayun Kabir, served as the Joint Convenor of the Khulna City unit of the Tanti Dal. The deadly assault took place on the evening of 1 November whilst Kabir was seated inside his fast-food establishment, ‘Hill Canteen’, situated behind the Rayermahal Big Mosque. According to the case details, Fayek Sheikh and his accomplices launched an unprovoked assault with sharp weapons, including machetes and Chinese axes, stemming from long-standing enmity. The assailants hacked him repeatedly, leaving him with fatal injuries before fleeing the scene.
Local residents rescued the critically wounded leader and rushed him to Khulna Medical College Hospital. Attending physicians declared him dead upon arrival. Following the killing, the victim’s son, Syed Nur Amin, lodged a murder case at Aranghata Police Station, naming Fayek Sheikh and several other accomplices.
SRB authorities confirmed that the arrested suspect will be transferred to Aranghata Police Station under Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) for formal legal proceedings. Whilst the crime scene falls under Aranghata Police Station, the residence of the accused lies within neighbouring Khalishpur Police Station, as the broader Rayermahal locality overlaps both police administrative jurisdictions. Law enforcement agencies continue their drive to trace and detain the remaining fugitives linked to the case.
