A madrasa teacher has been arrested in Sylhet over allegations that he sexually abused two child students at the institution where he taught. Police arrested the accused, identified as Fayzul Haque, on Wednesday night in Jaintapur and later showed him as arrested in a case before producing him in court.
Haque is a teacher at a madrasa in the Pirer Bazar area of Sylhet Sadar upazila, where he taught students in the Hifz section. The two children involved in the allegations are reportedly aged between eight and 10.
According to police, the children’s families lodged complaints after the two students returned home from the madrasa and began refusing to go back. Their parents reportedly tried to persuade them to return and even reprimanded them, but the children remained unwilling to attend the institution.
The children subsequently told their guardians about what they allegedly experienced at the madrasa. According to the account given by their families to police, the children were required to go to the teacher’s room at night. They alleged that they were beaten when they refused and subjected to inappropriate acts when they went there.
Shahparan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Ferdous Ahmed said the allegations involved two children aged eight to 10. The police began looking for Haque after receiving the complaint from the families.
Police said Haque left the madrasa after learning that the families had approached the authorities and went to Jaintapur, where his home is located. Officers subsequently arrested him there.
Following his arrest, Haque was questioned by police. The OC said the accused admitted to the alleged acts during the preliminary interrogation. Police also asked why he had not considered marrying again instead of engaging in such behaviour with the children.
According to the OC, Haque replied: “I don’t like women.”
The allegation has raised serious concerns because the victims are children who were studying at a religious educational institution and were allegedly subjected to abuse by a teacher. The case is now proceeding through the legal process, while the children’s accounts and medical findings are expected to form part of the investigation.
Police said the two children are being taken for medical examinations. Their medical assessment is expected to help investigators document any physical evidence relevant to the allegations.
Haque has already been produced before the court after being formally shown as arrested in the case. The investigation will determine the circumstances surrounding the allegations and establish the evidence required for further legal proceedings.
As the case moves forward, the protection and wellbeing of the two children remain a central concern. Allegations involving abuse of minors require careful investigation, particularly where the accused is someone entrusted with the education and supervision of children.
