Miraz Makes Stunning CPL Debut in Guyana Victory

Mehedi Hasan Miraz made a long-awaited Caribbean Premier League (CPL) debut in emphatic fashion, producing an impressive spell of three wickets to help Guyana Amazon Warriors secure a four-wicket victory over Saint Lucia Kings.

The Bangladesh all-rounder had to wait several years for his opportunity in the Caribbean competition. Miraz was initially expected to make his CPL debut in 2017 with Trinbago Knight Riders, but that opportunity never materialised. When his chance finally arrived, he made an immediate impact with the ball.

Bowling in a pressure situation, Miraz finished with excellent figures of 4-0-13-3. He dismissed John Campbell, Kemol Savory and Charith Asalanka, combining accuracy with tight control throughout his four-over spell. Of his 24 deliveries, 13 were dot balls, meaning more than half of his deliveries conceded no runs.

His contribution was particularly valuable as Guyana restricted Saint Lucia Kings to 119 runs after the latter opted to bat first. Miraz played a key role alongside experienced South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who produced an outstanding five-wicket haul.

Tahir, who also captains Guyana Amazon Warriors, conceded only 17 runs while taking five wickets. His performance earned him the Player of the Match award as Guyana’s bowlers maintained consistent pressure on the Saint Lucia batting line-up.

The chase was not entirely straightforward, but Guyana remained in control for most of the second innings. They eventually reached their target with nine balls to spare, completing a four-wicket victory. Glenn Phillips and unbeaten batter Quinton Sampson both made 37 runs to provide the foundation for the successful chase.

Miraz’s own contribution with the bat was limited. Coming in during the run chase, he scored one run from four deliveries before being dismissed. His principal impact, however, came with the ball, where his economical spell and three wickets helped put Guyana in a commanding position.

The CPL appearance also marks another step in Miraz’s growing experience in overseas franchise cricket. Earlier this year, he was part of the Galle Gladiators’ title-winning campaign in the Lanka Premier League. He was also involved with Lahore Qalandars when they won the Pakistan Super League, although he did not get the opportunity to play a match in that competition.

His CPL debut therefore represented his second overseas franchise league appearance on the field, and he made the opportunity count immediately. At 28, Miraz has already established himself as an important member of Bangladesh’s international set-up, particularly with his ability to contribute both as an off-spinner and as a lower-order batter.

After the match, Tahir was quick to praise Miraz for stepping in and delivering when Guyana needed him. The former South African leg-spinner acknowledged the quality of Mohammad Nabi, who had previously been an important bowler for the side, while highlighting Miraz’s performance as a strong replacement.

“Very high-quality bowler Nabi was, he was our best bowler. Coming in for him, Miraz bowled really well. That is exactly what we wanted. It is great to have him in the team. Miraz is a world-class bowler who has been performing at international level,” Tahir said.

For Miraz, the performance could prove a significant boost as he continues to build his reputation in franchise cricket outside Bangladesh. His ability to restrict scoring while taking wickets is particularly valuable in T20 cricket, where bowlers are often required to make an immediate impact.

Although his batting contribution was minimal on this occasion, his disciplined bowling was enough to make his first CPL appearance a memorable one. Guyana’s victory, meanwhile, gave the Bangladesh all-rounder an ideal start to his Caribbean campaign.
